Street / Lawn Maintenance Tech

The City of Avon Park is accepting applications for a full-time Street / Lawn Maintenance Tech

Under the direction of the Streets Superintendent, performs duties necessary to support Public Works to ensure the proper maintenance of City streets, right of ways, grounds, fields, and common areas for City owned property and/or facilities providing for a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. In addition , performs a variety of maintenance work, operates light automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of street and storm drainage facilities and systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Mowing right of ways, grounds and common areas for the City
  • Street repair
  • Maintaining storm drains
  • Maintaining public parks
  • Assist in the implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation activities designed to provide quality street and drainage services.
  • Inspects and/or repairs streets, drainage systems and storm sewer systems at frequent intervals to ensure all aspects of the systems are functioning properly..
  • Responsible for the care and replacement of plants and trees, to include but not limited to raking, pruning, mulching, clearing, planting, minor irrigation installs and repair, mowing, weeding, edging and painting.
  • Responsible for safely using and proper care and maintenance of all tools and equipment necessary to complete projects, assignments and/or tasks.
  • May assist in placement of signs.
  • May be assigned to remove and dispose of deceased animals
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
  • Duties may include cleaning public restrooms.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Required knowledge and experience is normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or GED, and one (1) year work related experience are required. Ability to understand and guard against job site hazards by observing proper safety precautions. Some knowledge of simple hand tools used in grounds maintenance operations. Establish and maintain working relationships with other staff members and the public.
  • Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
  • Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical equations for application of fertilizers and use of chemical cleaners.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to take and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and product directions.
  • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure of a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work during weekends and night time events and hours of operations.
  • Skilled in operating landscaping equipment and hand held and/or power tools.

Sanitation Laborer

The City of Avon Park is acecpting applications for a full-time Sanitation Laborer The Sanitation worker works in the loading of refuse through a designated route, picking up solid waste containers, and depositing the containers into a collection vehicle, and returning containers to the prescribed area. Makes special collections as assigned

* Manually loads furniture, brush, other typical bulk garbage items
* Ability to lift 75 lb. Observes surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, etc. in order to assure that solid waste is collected is a safe manner; regulates traffic in hazardous conditions in order to assure safety. Washes collection vehicles.

Line Maintenance Tech II
Pay Range $11.58 - $17.23
The City of Avon Park is accepting applications for a full-time Line Maintenance Tech II

This is a journey level position with work in the installation and maintenance of the municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems.  Employees in this class are engaged in the construction and repair of water and wastewater mains and attendant devices.  Work includes connection of fittings, excavation for the installation of lines, placement, removal and minor repair to water meters and the testing of water pressure as required

  • Lays water main; installs hydrants, valves, fittings, clamps and      sleeves, and responsible for the more difficult repairs; flushes lines; backfills around pipes.
  • Operators all necessary heavy equipment such as boring and jacking      equipment, trencher, and other related equipment, may operator backhoe.  Must be able to operator heavy equipment to include dump trucks, jet rodder, tapping machine      equipment, trencher, backhoe, pow-r-mole (boring) machine, vac-truck and      other related equipment.
  • Learn to read water main blueprints t assist in selecting proper fittings and materials for the project; measures for lengths of pipe necessary.
  • Cuts and bevels pipes; threads pipes.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, practices and tools required for pip, main, service and water meter installation, testing and repair.
  • Knowledge of the water distribution and wastewater collection system including mains, hydrants, water meters and lift stations.
  • Skill in the use of pipefitting, plumbing and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot such as testing faulty meters and locating leaks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the general public.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical manual tasks for extended periods, often in adverse climatic conditions.  Task involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pound or over) items.

Performs all other associated duties in regards to the installation, maintenance of water and sewer lines/attributes and other associated services provide by City.

 The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The job requires work that involves climbing, walking, stooping, laying or standing.
  • The job involves constant outside work.

At the fully competent level, employees in this class perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in installing, maintaining and repairing water mains, sanitary sewers, and other work in connection with the water and wastewater systems. Employees operate a variety of machinery and equipment in performing work assignments.

Must have the ability to perform manual labor tasks in the installation, maintenance and repair of water/sewer lines, fore hydrants, valves and other related systems or elements.

Waste Water Plant
Operator C

The City of Avon Park is accepting application for a full-time Waste Water Plant Operator C
 performs duties necessary to support the Water Division to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the water treatment systems and equipment within the appropriate Federal and State regulatory guidelines.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Prepare log sheets: change chart and recording sheets on flow recorders
  2. Inspect motors, bearing, and gear boxes for overheating and proper lubrication.
  3. Collects samples of water/wastewater at various stages of processing, performs lab test on same, and records data collected.
  4. Maintains equipment, process tanks, building, and grounds in a clean and orderly manner.
  5. Preforms mathematical calculations on collected data; calibrates continuously recording instruments; enters collected data into computer data base.
  6. Manually operates valves to set up a wide variety of flow schemes to preform pumping and equipment functions.
  7. Works in confined spaces or hazardous areas
  8. Lifts medium- heavy objects, climbs ladders and stairs
  9. Prepares and maintains regulatory records
  10. Ability to maintain dual certification from FDEP in Water and Wastewater Treatment

 Required:

  • Dual FDEP Certification in water and wastewater treatment
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. 
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver license.
  • Two (2) years related experience and/or related water/ wastewater operation.
  • Must pass applicable pre-employment testing and background checks.
